Hello and welcome!
This is the personal website of Julia Straub, Professor of Modern English Literature at the University of Fribourg. In my teaching, I cover English literature from the 1780s onwards. My research interests include a variety of topics, and I try to connect my teaching and research where possible.
My first book (A Victorian Muse: The Afterlife of Dante’s Beatrice in Nineteenth-Century Literature, 2007) was about Victorian literature, intermediality, and Victorian gender ideology. My second book (The Rise of New Media, 1750-1850: Transatlantic Discourse and American Memory, 2017) explored early American literature and the links between literary and media history in a transatlantic context. I am currently working on a project dealing with motherhood and form in contemporary anglophone literature.
I welcome proposals for doctoral supervision for projects that overlap with own research interests. Prospective doctoral students should include a CV and a short outline of their planned doctoral project in addition to a letter of motivation.
Office hours for UniFr students are by appointment.
